Have you ever visited a wildlife center? Many people think that’s the best place to see animals. But what if you live far from one?
The truth is, wildlife is all around you.
Try this first. Step outside and stand still for one minute. Don’t talk. Don’t move much. Just look.
At first, it might seem like nothing is happening. But then you may notice something small—a bird landing on a fence, an insect moving through the grass, or a squirrel pausing to watch you.
Now think about the animals you might see near your home. Have you ever spotted a rabbit nearby? Watch how it moves. What does it eat? Where does it go when it disappears?
Look up for a moment. How many different kinds of birds can you find? Notice their colors, their size, and the way they fly. Some may hop along the ground, while others glide high above you.
What other animals visit your yard or neighborhood? When do you usually see them? Early in the morning? Late in the evening? Where do they live when they’re not in sight?

Try turning your observations into questions like these. Then see if you can discover the answers just by watching carefully.
You don’t need to go anywhere special to enjoy wildlife. It’s already part of your everyday world.
All you have to do is notice.
Have fun exploring!
Great post Sharon. At my Mom’s house, she keeps food out for the birds and squirrels. Last time I visited, there was a dove that took up the whole bird feeder until the smaller birds ran him off. It is nice and calming.
Thanks so much for your comment, Sandra, it is amazing what we find in so many different spots, for sure!
Sharon,
Thanks for the reminder.
I live in Florida and there is so much wildlife right in my backyard – alligators and otters in the lake behind my house, rabbits and squirrels hopping around in the grass, and every kind of bird, from sandhill cranes to white ibis, flying overhead. After reading this post, I think I’ll start keeping a list of all the different creatures I spot.
I’m off to see what I find today as I venture outdoors.
Thanks for your comment, Suzanne, I appreciate your sentiments so much, and let’s see what we all find! 🙂
